The Hermitage Amsterdam is a branch of the famous Hermitage St. Petersburg. The infinitely famous art and historical museum was open to the public in Amsterdam in February of 2004. The final construction plans should be complete by 2007 and will entail 43,000 feet of museum space. The Hermitage Amsterdam is housed in the Amstelhof building which was previously a nursing home. The first exhibit was brought to Amsterdam from the Hermitage St. Petersburg was beautiful Greek jewelry dating as far back as the sixth to second century BC. Initially, all exhibits will be displayed over a five month time span until the completion of the construction. Currently, there are no permanent exhibits so patrons should know which temporary displays they have awaiting before deciding to visit.

As guests enter the Hermitage Amsterdam, they are greeted with an plaque reading “Rules of Conduct in the Hermitage” which was established by Catherine the Great. The first and second floors house six exhibition halls and the third floor is home to children's classes and a lecture hall. A café and several souvenir areas are located on the ground floor of the magnificent museum.
