The Keukenhof Gardens are close to Amsterdam, and display a bounty of bulb flowers. In 1949, the Mayor of Lisse enlisted the aid of nearly a dozen exporters of Dutch bulb flowers, in order to create this modern day spectacle. The original goal was to put on display all the types of flowers and the latest hybrids, as well as to allow visitors to purchase bulbs of their own.
The spring exhibition is actually the largest exhibition of this type in the entire world, and is of course best showcased at the height of the tulip's growing season. This limits the open season for viewing the Keukenhof Gardens but a vacation planned around these dates in budget hotels near the Keukenhof in Amsterdam is well worth it. The fact that more than 7 million spring flowers are present in these gardens helps to ensure that you will always catch at least a few varieties of flowers at their peak whenever you visit sometime during the spring flower season.
