Formerly a working class section of Amsterdam, de Pijp is a marvelous melting pot of cultures and nationalities. There have always been many settlers who have come here such as De Haan, Mondriaan and scores of students looking for a cheap room to rent. De Pijp is a lively bohemian district also known as the "Latin Quarter". Artists, students and families have all decided to make de Pijp their home at one time or another because it is far removed from the hustle and bustle of busy Amsterdam.
The city is overflowing with fantastic cafés, restaurants, coffee shops and bars. A visit to Amsterdam wouldn't be the same without coming here and taking a stroll down Albert Cuypstraat and Ferdinand Bolstraat, the main streets in de Pijp. There are many exotic Syrian, Moroccan and Surinamese restaurants here as well as a typical Amsterdam pub that is situated conveniently on almost every corner. There are also Islamic butchers and Spanish, Indian and Turkish delicatessens all over the city. If you make a point to visit de Pijp, you are sure to find the right spot to suit your own personal tastes.
