      Stedelijk Museum Details

The Stedelijk Museum, built in 1895, is the preeminent museum for modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. The museum has been renovated and enlarged, and re-opened late September 2012. The restored historical museum building was enlarged with a futuristic white annex by the Dutch bureau Benthem Crouwel Architects. Stedelijk has now more space than ever before to show its world famous collections and cutting edge exhibitions. In fact, the hall in the basement is now the largest exhibition space in Amsterdam. Visitors to the museum can take part in numerous events that involve collaborations with other local bodies and form a varied program. The museum is open every day from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm and on Thursday from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm. Admission costs EUR 15.00 per adult, with the usual applicable discounts, and free for Museumkaart holders. The Stedelijk Museum is located in the citys famous Museumplein in the heart of Amsterdam, next to the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. More than 90,000 artworks reflect a wide variety of disciplines: painting, sculpture, film and video art, works on paper, artists books, photography, the applied arts, and design. Represented in the collection are some arts foremost names, such as Hendrik Breitner, Kazimir Malevich (as one of the largest collections in the world), Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, and Gerrit Rietveld, as well as important movements such as Bauhaus, Cobra, and De Stijl. The photography collection is the oldest of any museum of modern art in Western Europe, and the collection of film and video art is similarly unique. The voluminous and varied poster collection and the collection of modern furniture are also some of the worlds best. Included amongst the museums masterpieces is the complete 1926 Harrenstein Bedroom by Gerrit Rietveld. The museum also hosts events that include educational sessions, guided tours, workshops and readings. Family lab is a place for all ages to explore the artifacts in the museum, and every Sunday is designated Family day for a greater chance of engagement for younger visitors.
