      West Indisch House Details

The West Indisch House in Amsterdam is the former headquarters for the West India Trading Company, where the company planned the construction of a fort on Manhattan Island in 1625, which was the starting point of New York City in America. Located on the Herenmarkt Square, the West Indisch House was severely damaged by fire, and was reconstructed during 1978 through 1981. At this time, a fountain was built in the courtyard of the building, featuring a statue of Peter Stuyvesant, the governor of New Amsterdam.

Visitors to the area will find several lovely restaurants where they can enjoy a fine meal. There are also fun things to do nearby, such as Randy Roys Redlight Tour, the Sauna Deco, and the Arendsnest.
