Accommodation & places to visit in Zaandam

Zaandam is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland and is the main city of the municipality of Zaanstad. It is built along a spinning windmill lined Zaan river near the North Sea Canal. Zaandam is also in close proximity to Amsterdam. Zaandam is largely a modern town that merits a few day stop-over and explorations. One is rewarded with picturesque scenes of a pretty harbor, spiked with masts and fringed by wooden houses that even Claude Monet could not resist in immortalized in a series of his paintings when he spent some time here in Zaandam in the 1870's.

Visitors can take a very attractive boat trip on the Zaan, with the old houses and windmills as a charming backdrop. How about visiting the open-air museum just north of town? It is the reconstructed 1700 century village of Zaandam. Where over time many typical old wooden homes and windmills of the 17th and 18th centuries were taken down, re-erected and carefully restored. However what makes this village so unique is that almost all the houses are lived in therefore it gives a vivid impression of how life would have been in the earlier centuries.
