The Sint Laurenskerk (Saint Lawrence Church) is essentially a 15th century church in modern surroundings. The architect was Evert Spoorwater of Antwerp, and its squat tower from 1339 is a clear indication of its earlier Romanesque-Gothic roots. On top of this base are 4 clocks from the 17th century. This is an interesting juxtapose of styles in a backdrop of mainly modern buildings. There are, in fact, several contemporary hotels in Rotterdam close to Sint Laurens Church in the Delfshaven area. This sector is old, but Sint Laurens church is one of the few survivors of the bombings. It is a miracle that the church’s statue of Erasmus, by Hendriek de Keyser, survived. It had been buried in the gardens of the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen.
The church did suffer some damage, and many parts were reconstructed or altered by 1968. W. G. Quist added several black blocks to the north side in the late 1970s. Of particular interest to visitors are the three organs. If you attend one of the many concerts held here, you may hear the main organ in performance, which is one of the largest in Europe. The church’s central location makes it easy to reach from the modest budget hotels near Sint Laurens Church in Rotterdam.
