The Stadhuisplein is Dutch for the Town Hall Square. It is home to the Stadhuis (Town Hall), the Post Office building, shops, outdoor cafés, bars and the magnificent war memorial. Whether you book an expensive or discount hotel in Rotterdam near the Stadhuisplein, plan to visit the square. You can while away an entire afternoon people-watching, as the square is busy most days.
The Stadhuis and the nearby post office buildings are the sole remains of the 1920s. Even the family-owned hotels in Rotterdam near the Stadhuisplein are post-war, as much of the area was bombed during WW II. The architect of the Town Hall was Henri Evans, and its interior hosts a central bust of him. Around the square, you can find many small shops and cafés, while in the center, you will find one of the most compelling sculptural groups in the city. This is the Memorial to the Fallen. This bronze sculpture is by Mari Andriessen, and features 2 men, a woman and a child. Beautifully rendered, it looks to the future - while not forgetting the hard times and memories of the past. Princess Wilhelmina unveiled it in May 1957.
