Middelburg is a city of medium size that is located on the Walcheren Peninsula in the southwestern region of the Netherlands. It was established in the 8th or 9th century as a fortified town. Although it suffered extensive damage in World War II, much of the town was rebuilt and it retains the charm of centuries past. The city hall is situated in a medieval abbey that also houses a museum. It is famous for its collection of tapestries. Budget hotels in Middelburg can be found close to the town hall.

The city has its own railway station that connects to many other major connections across the Netherlands such as Amsterdam, The Hague and the Schiphol International Airport. This offers a great deal of convenience for the many people that travel the Netherlands by train. There are walking tours available that will take people all around highlights of the city, including the impressive Lange Jan Tower.
