At the confluence of the Scheldt estuary and a channel, Sluis was first established in the 13th century. Getting around this historic, fortified town and taking in the remaining preserved ramparts is quite easy on foot or via bicycle. Visitors can view the Oostpoort, or East Gate, and its partially restored bridge. While touring the historic elements of Sluis, be sure to visit the remains of Lines of Fontaine-Cantelmo and Fort Isabella; a stop for lunch at the Oud Sluis restaurant is highly recommended as it is renowned for its culinary efforts.
