Scandinavia House in New York

Scandinavia House is home to the Nordic Center of America, and is the headquarters for the American-Scandinavian Foundation. The American-Scandinavian Foundation is a non-profit organization whose goal is to build cultural and educational ties between the United States and the Nordic countries. The Nordic countries include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Scandinavia House offers an assortment of art, design, and historical exhibitions. Film series, lectures, concerts, symposia, and language courses are also available to guests. Scandinavia House also features regular programs for children and families. These activities are held in the Heimbold Family Children's Learning Center. Most activities are for children between the ages of three and 10. At the center children learn about Scandinavia culture through books, toys, workshops and parties. The Heimbold Family Children's Learning Center is open to the public only on Saturdays between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. All activities at the Children's Center are free of charge. Those who would like to visit the gallery pay a fee. Those who enjoy shopping can buy unique items at the store in Scandinavia House. The store, called The Nordic Center in America, carries all types of items like art glass, textiles, jewelry, and household items. The designs of all items are distinctive and the colors are bold. The store carries works by modern designers as well as works from traditional Nordic legends. The store is open Monday to Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
