Construction of Auckland Harbour Bridge took three years, from 1956 to 1959, to complete. It is a cantilever truss bridge, designed by Gilbert Roberts spanning over 1,000 metres between St Mary’s Bay and Northcote Point in Auckland. Many visitors cross the bridge each year without notice – but more are interested in the Auckland Harbour Bridge because it offers an excellent view of the city at night and, thanks to pedestrian lanes, can be a great spot to take pictures of the city skyline.
A popular attraction for active tourists, a number of operators offer climbing excursions on the Auckland Harbour Bridge. These hikes give visitors a different perspective on the bridge, as well as a wealth of information about Auckland Harbour and the city itself. The other top attraction for visitors interested in the bridge is bungy jumping, after all, Auckland Harbour Bridge was the first harbour bridge to be bungy jumped.
