Goat Island Marine Reserve is a 524-hectare reserve, formed in 1975 between Cape Rodney and Okakari Point. It is an incredibly popular place for divers and snorkelers of all abilities, particularly those interested in seeing local fish up close and personal. The Goat Island reserve is an excellent place for beginning divers to get a solid grasp of the skills they need – dives are frequently conducted from the beach itself.

Whether you’re interested in learning more about the unique ecosystem and inhabitants of Goat Island Marine Reserve, keen to build your diving skills or just looking for a picturesque spot to relax and enjoy natural New Zealand, there’s something for you at Goat Island. There are a number of outfitters offering equipment for hire, guided tours and information for reserve visitors. Though Goat Island Channel isn’t particularly deep, strong currents can develop in bad weather, so divers and swimmers are advised to take appropriate precautions.
