Mount Eden, also known as Maungawhau, is the tallest volcano in the city of Auckland. The Maori, New Zealand’s indigenous people, used the lower slopes of Mt Eden to cultivate gardens and today a herd of cattle grazes the mountain with permission from the local council. Maungawhau has a number of trails for hikers and walkers, bringing the 196-metre summit within easy reach for visitors and enticing passers by to linger over the landscape.

Busses frequent the area, and the train station is a ten-minute walk from Mount Eden. Because of Mount Eden’s location in a suburban area, there are plenty of facilities for tourists nearby. Within the park itself, visitors will find tables for picnicking and drinking fountains – there is also a playground at the base of the mountain. Maungawhau offers an excellent vantage point for visiting photographers hoping to capture the best of the city below.
