Maungakiekie is the Maori name for One Tree Hill, one of Auckland’s tallest volcanic peaks. For the Maori, One Tree Hill is a memorial ground, and European settlers have treated the area with a similar respect. One Tree Hill is enveloped in Cornwall Park, established as a public park by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1901.

The park itself has a number of intermingling trails for explorers of all abilities, some of these will lead visitors up One Tree Hill itself. Once atop Maungakiekie, you’ll have an impressive view over the whole of Auckland, and the opportunity to take a closer look at the obelisk dedicated to the Maori that adorns Sir John Logan Campbell’s grave. There is presently no tree on One Tree Hill as the original totara tree was cut down, and replaced by a pine tree in the 1800s. The ‘replacement’ tree was attacked by protesters in 1994, then again in 2000. No agreement has been reached about further tree planting at the summit.
