Britomart Transport Centre is the new name, and face, of Auckland’s main railway station. The $204m project offers a single, centralised connecting point for bus, ferry and rail travellers in the heart of Auckland. The city council are keen to point out that Britomart Transport Centre isn’t just a railway station – it is an ongoing project for transport, heritage and urban renewal.
Perhaps the most unique thing about Britomart Transport Center is the fact that the railway station is hidden underground – all three platforms, all five lines of rail traffic, and some 17,000 passengers an hour are tucked away beneath the buildings in the area. The streets surrounding Queen Elizabeth Square, where Britomart is located, have been redeveloped to enable bus traffic to move through the area with ease. And, a glass canopy stretches from Custom Street to Quay Street, meaning travelers can move between ferries, buses and trains in a sheltered environment.
