Arrowtwon, a historic ‘living museum’ just 25 minutes north of Queenstown, provides tourists and resident New Zealanders with the opportunity to take a breath of fresh air and look into the past. The community has its roots in the 1860s, when a gold discovery in the Wakatipu region led to an influx of settlers seeking their fortunes. The town bulged to over 7,000 residents at it’s peak, and today is home for just over 1,500 people.
The Arrowtown of today includes the same facilities as most towns – a hospital, museum, pool, golf course, school and the like. But in addition, Arrowtown hosts a bustling tourism trade, providing an ideal resting place for skiers and hikers, as well as those interested in soaking up a little local history at the Arrowtown Museum, touring famous film sites or visiting local wineries. Popular attractions in the Arrowtown area include gold mining sites, the Lakes Distric Museum and Lord of the Rings locations.
