Before Rosenkrantz Tower was erected in Norway, other structures existed, including Lagabote’s Keep dating back to around 1270 and Jorgen Hansson’s defense structures from about 1520. When Erik Rosenkrantz, the governor of Bergen Castle, commissioned the tower in medieval times, he incorporated both of these structures in his design. The tower was created to be a combination of a fortified tower as well as a residence. The tower offers an incredible view of the sea front, making it a popular tourist attraction.
Visitors staying in hotels in Bergen can take a guided tour of the grounds, learning about life in medieval times for Norwegians, as well as hearing some interesting and entertaining stories. Tours of both Rosenkrantz Tower and Haakon’s Hall are typically offered hourly through the summer. The tower is in the center of Bergen and within walking distance of the Fish Market, another popular draw for tourists.
