Tourists staying at hotels in Bergen can take a short trip about 20 km north of the city to visit the Salhus Tricotagefabrik knitting mill, established in 1859 during the industrialization of Norway. Today, the plant is closed (since 1989) and has been incorporated into the Norsk Trikotasjemuseum, or Museum of Norwegian Knitting Industry. It is the only museum of its kind in the country and offers a look at the importance of the industry. In fact, this particular brand was internationally important to Sweden, Japan, and the United States under the Krone trademark.
Visitors to the Museum of Norwegian Knitting Industry can take tours of the old production area and follow the manufacturing of the popular Salhus sweater, which can be purchased as a souvenir in the museum shop. The museum also offers tourists in Bergen the chance to view special exhibitions and films and eat in the café. Also check out the view from the visitor’s dock. When you are through, take a trip up Mount Floyen, and tour Haakon's Hall.
