Edvard Munch is one of the most significant artists from Norway of all time, and the Munch Museum in Oslo is a collection of his artwork that celebrates his life, history, and talent. Upon his death in 1944, he unconditionally bequeathed his entire collection to the city for such a purpose, and because of his unique influence on European art trends and pioneer Expressionism in Germany and the Nordic countries, his name is known worldwide.
Though perhaps best known for his painting The Scream, visitors to hotels in Oslo will discover through a tour of this museum will discover that his collection actually includes around 1100 paintings, over 4500 drawings, 18,000 prints, several graphic plates, and sculptures. The Munch Museum also offers a great deal of documentary and educational material on Munch as well as several other important Norwegian artists. Film screenings, guided tours, lectures, and audioguides are available, and you can visit a shop for souvenirs and a café for lunch before leaving to visit the nearby Oslo City Hall, Nobel Peace Center, or Viking Ship Museum.
