Perhaps the northernmost Protestant cathedral in the world, the Tromsø Cathedral is a fantastic and unusual example of Gothic revival architecture and the seat of the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. It is, in fact, the only cathedral in Norway that is constructed of wood and, completed according to the plans of architect Christian Heinrich Grosch in 1861. Visitors to hotels in Tromsø will note that this is a main attraction and a landmark in the northern town.

Built on a site that has likely been used for church since at least the 13th century, the Tromsø Cathedral is not the only area attraction, with the Polarmuseet, Northern Lights Planetarium, and Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum all nearby for viewing pleasure. The church that originally stood on the ground here in Tromsø was relocated to the northern part of the city and later to Elverhøy further up in the hills prior to the construction of this cathedral, built using a cog joint method.
