Vacationers at hotels in Kristiansand will want to visit Møvik Fort, which houses the Kristiansand Cannon Museum (Kanonmuseet). Here, you’ll find these historical weapons mostly from the Second World War, during which time cannons were especially popular in warfare. These large guns came to Møvig during German occupation of Norway in 1940 to help them guard the shipping lanes of the Skagerak. In order to do so, the German army planted 38cm cannons at Møvig and over the distance from Skagerak to Hanstholm (in Denmark), lining a total of 116 kilometers.

Perhaps the most spectacular draw for tourists at the Kristiansand Cannon Museum is the Vara Battery that it houses. This is the world’s second largest cannon that was ever mounted on land. While not everyone is interested in warfare or the history of guns and ammo, even the least concerned individual will be in awe of this type of firepower. Take the kids to the Kristiansand Zoo afterward, or make a side trip to the Iron Museum.
