On Colon Island in the Bocas del Toro region of the Caribbean, you'll find the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, or for short (and to save ink), it goes by the acronym STRI. STRI has established itself as a site for education and research on aquatic life and sciences in the tropical regions of the world. The site is packed with students and scientists researching the local area and learning new things every day. The station sits in the middle of miles of undisturbed tropical forest, surrounded by beautiful coastal lagoons, with several tiny islands and reefs right off the coast.

More a point of interest for science lovers and researchers than a real tourist site, the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute is, nonetheless, a great place for nature buffs, having made several major discoveries on such subjects as agriculture and sealife. Sadly, though, with the recent major growth of the urban areas of Bocas del Toro, Colon Island may soon prove to be a less effective place to hold scientific research.
