The University of Panama, or the Universidad de Panama, in Spanish, was founded in October of 1935, created by presidential decree earlier that year, in the month of May. The school's humble beginnings took place in a single wing of the National Institute, with just 175 people making up its student body, studying in the fields of Education, Commerce, Natural Sciences, Pharmacy, Pre Engineering and Legal Practice. Today, the University has expanded to service a student body of nearly seventy five thousand, with more than two hundred buildings throughout the country.

When it began, the school's founder and president was the distinguished Doctor Octavio Mendez Pereira. The University of Panama holds itself to the highest ethical and scholarly standards and is the premier house of learning in the country of Panama, with faculties covering fine arts, public and business administration, architecture, economy, nursing and political sciences, to name only a few.
