Chateau de Versailles Paris

Versailles is one of the most famous gardens in the entire world. Its sheer size is breathtaking and one feels as though the entire universe is opening up before them. Versailles was originally designed as a government building for the monarch, Louis XIV. It is a pristine example of the French Baroque style of architecture. Still, many critics feel that this is not a very hospitable place to spend your time. One of the common complaints amongst critics is that the chateau is "overbearing". There are several avenues that project from the palace at Versailles and they enfold the town, palace, garden and forest all together in one large scene. There are great basins, an orangery and a huge collection of outdoor sculpture that are exquisite. These are some of the most elaborate fountains ever designed! The park and garden were originally designed by Andre Le Nôtre who was surely a genius of architectural mastery. Versailles also has undergone subsequent additions to its already immense scale. The Petit Trianon was a gift to Marie-Antoinette in 1774 who appreciated an irregular style of design with hills, rocks and streams running all through the area. The Hameau was also added as a stage village for her to play in with her friends. Versailles is truly a spectacular marvel to behold.
