At the uppermost part of Montmartre Hill in Paris stands the Sacré-Coeur Catholic basilica which was first constructed in the 19th century. It is well known for its magnificent "pastry- like" architecture that stares down over the city. This is considered to be a very holy place and a central location for the Catholic devotion to the Holy Virgin Mary. The Sacré Coeur attracts many travelers from all around the world. It is closely affiliated with many churches and has been the subject of many paintings of the Montmartre artists on the Place du Tertre. The Sacré-Coeur district offers many incredible views of Paris because of its elevated location. The design is such that it resembles the village like streets and squares of Paris and the relaxing cafés and restaurants. The painters who set up their studios there attract many tourists and, as you walk away from the core tourist area, you can find some secluded, charming spots that are very pleasant in such a crowded city as Paris. In order to visit the Sacré Coeur, just go the nearest metro station known as "Abbesses" which is part of line 12. You should definitely plan for a short walk up the hill but it is part of a very pleasant experience. The Sacré-Coeur is always open from 6.45 in the morning until 11:00 at night. This is a great location to see.
