The construction of Notre-Dame de Paris began in the 12th century during the reign of Louis VII. The centuries gone by have left a rich impression of the history that lives within these walls. Pope Alexander III laid the first stone and the construction of Notre Dame was then completed about 200 years later in 1345. The choir there was completed much earlier in 1182 and the nave in 1208. There are many beautiful constructions at Notre Dame such as the west front and towers and a series of chapels that were added to the nave during the 13th century. The transept crossings are an especially noteworthy construction designed by Jean de Chelles and Pierre de Montreuil. The building was essentially completed according to the original plans of these designers. The Cathedral was nearly burned by the Communards but the Notre Dame survived unscathed and now is undergoing a 10 year program of general maintenance and restoration. The structure is likely to be shrouded in scaffolds for the foreseeable future. This is certainly unfortunate for tourists who always enjoy the buildings exterior. Nevertheless, Notre Dame remains a great structure that will continue to be recognized for its long and very rich history.
