The Cochin hospital got its name from Jean-Denis Cochin. He was the parish priest of Saint-Jacques du Haut-Pas, who founded a hospital that was meant to cater to the needy as well as the workers in the district. Aside from the hospital, there is also a biomedical research institute that has been combined with the health care institution since the year 1990. Named the Cochin Institute, this was reorganized in 2002 as a joint research that deals with genetics, cell and molecular biology.
