The Porte Saint Denis is a triumphal arch constructed in 1672 to honor Louis XIV’s victories in Franche-Comte and on the Rhine. Designed by architect Francois Blondel and crafted by sculptor Michel Anguier, the arch replaced a gate that had been part of the medieval wall constructed by Charles V. The arch itself was inspired by the Arch of Titus in Rome. It has a prominent central arch that is flanked by two smaller arches. The center arch towers 24.6 meters in height and is 25 meters long.
