In 1893 Theophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn opened a small fashion store at the corner of Lafayette and Chaussée d'Antin streets in Paris. Later, the company purchased the entire building there and Théophile commissioned someone to design the layout of the Haussmann location. The Galeries Lafayette is the fabulous result of all his efforts and it includes a wonderful glass and steel dome with Art Nouveau staircases that are a great representation of 20th century architecture in France. The store at Lafayette has since been designated as an historic monument and this is no surprise when you see its magnificent design.. Another Lafayette location has since opened up in Trump Tower in Manhattan, New York City. Unfortunately, this location could not compare to the original store and went out of business. The Galeries Lafayette is a French department store that can never be equaled. The store itself has 10 stories in all and it can keep shoppers busy for en entire day if they are up to the challenge. If you are looking for a great place to spend a weekend in Paris, the Galeries Lafayette will surely meet all your expectations as a wonderful place to shop and enjoy a day.
