A famous convent, the Monasterio de Santa Catalina or the Santa Catalina Monastary is one of the sights of Arequipa. The beautiful, Mudejar style convent founded by Maria de Guzman that was built in 1580 is also known for its walls that are vividly painted. During the earlier times, the convent would accept women that are from high-class Spanish families. The nuns at Santa Catalina lived a lavish lifestyle as it was recorded that they had slaves and held parties in the monastery. Families would pay a dowry – 2,400 silver coins upon their daughter’s entrance in the convent.
Sister Josefa Cadena reformed the monastery in 1871 and she freed all the servants and slaves. The convent that used to house 450 people was opened to the public in the year 1970. One of the things to do in Arequipa is to visit the Santa Catalina Monastary which has opened its doors to tourism. At present, there are about 20 nuns living in the northern complex of the monastery.
