Nevado Chachani, the highest of the many volcanoes in Southern Peru is one of the Arequipa attractions. Its name literally means “skirt” in Quechua, and in local legends, it has been labeled as a female character. Chcachani is an extinct volcano with a peak of 6000 meters and is classified as one of the easiest 6000 meter climb in the whole world.
One of the things to do in Arequipa, especially for the nature trippers and adventurers is to climb the Chachani. Since there are no glaciers in Chachani, the climb is easy, even for the inexperienced climbers. Climbing the volcano is very popular with the tourists and the route requires only crampons and ice axe. The biggest challenge would just be the altitude, especially for those who are not fully acclimated. Ascending the volcano from the base camp would take about six to eight hours and going down would take about half the time of the ascent.
