One of the wonderful sights of Arequipa that should not be missed is the El Misti, also known as Guagua-Putina. El Misti is a statovolcano with its last eruption dated in 1784. It has become a symbol of the city of Arequipa and some of the buildings of the city were constructed from the white volcanic stone of El Misti. It also holds an important role in Peruvian legends. The volcano has three concentric craters and in 1998, Inca mummies and Inca artifacts were excavated in the inner crater. These are now stored in the Museo de Santuarios Andinos.
El Misti’s impressive stature, with its snow-capped, perfect cone feature is an integral part of the Arequipa tourism. It has attracted tourists as climbing it does not present technical difficulties and there are two routes in which mountaineers and nature enthusiasts can enjoy. However, one must be careful as El Misti also has steep loose sand slopes.
