The Museum of Religious Art or the Museo de Arte Religioso is an important part of Cuzco tourism. It is located at the corner of the famous Hatunrumiyoc Street, an alleyway lined with Inca stonemasonry. The museum is housed in the magnificent Archbishop’s Palace, the former residence of the Archbishop of Cuzco. The palace is impressive with Moorish-style doors, balcony, carved-cedar ceilings, and stained glass windows. You will also find a small chapel and life size recreations of the Archbishops.
The Museum of Religious Art is one of the most famous Cuzco attractions as it contains a massive collection of colonial religious paintings – including important pieces of Juan Zapata and other masters of Andean painting. The paintings of biblical scenes should also not be missed. Wonderful religious and liturgical objects can also be found on display, as well as religious ornaments, handicrafts and sculptures. One should definitely reserve one to two hours in exploring the whole museum.
