One of the highlights of Lima and the most visited church is the Iglesia de San Francisco (Chuch of Saint Francis). It is one of the most beautiful sights of Lima because of its pristine towers and its Baroque style of architecture. This yellow church built in 1674 is known for its beautiful ceilings that are painted in a blend of Moorish and Spanish designs. The church’s architecture later on influenced the designs of other churches, such as the Iglesia de la Merced.
The church is definitely one of Lima’s most famous attractions as it also contains an impressive library that houses thousands of antique texts, some dating back to the 17th century and some of which were hand-written. The church is definitely most famous for its catacombs. It is Lima’s first cemetery and the bones of over 70,000 people that are stacked in strange geometric patterns can be found in its underground tunnels.
