Interestingly, unlike many hospitals and medical facilities, the Makati Medical Center in the Philippines was not formed by a government mandate but by a group of medical professionals who saw a need for a convenient medical center in a self-contained community in the south area of Manila in the 1960s. At the time, the motivation was business, with the founding members knowing that they would immediately be able to recruit a number of patients.

The group who formed the Makati Medical Center funded their costly project by recruiting more doctors, non-medical professionals and entrepreneurs interested in investment, and anyone sharing the dream. The center opened to the public in Makati in 1969 and later took on residents and interns, growing into a teaching hospital for aspiring medical professionals in the Philippines.
