Also an educational foundation, the San Juan De Dios Hospital in Manila is the oldest hospital in all the Philippines. It began as the Confraternity of Mercy in 1594 and was desecrated by a fire in 1603 and again by an earthquake in 1645. In these early times, however, it was the Brothers of St. John of God who devoted themselves to the care of the sick and broken, zealous in their task.

After another earthquake in 1863 that nearly destroyed the entire building, the Spanish government that was then in charge ordered the Brothers transferred to Cavite, and the San Juan De Dios Hospital in Manila was left to the Council of Inspectors. Today, this hospital in the Philippines is still a trusted place for both tourists staying in hotels in Manila and locals alike entrust their health to for care when ailing or injured.
