Called Ilong Pasig in Filipino, the Pasig River is a 25 kilometer body of water that divides Metro Manila into two sections while connecting Laguna de Bay to Manila Bay through the Napindan Channel. It’s fed by two major tributaries, the Marikani and San Juan Rivers. This used to be an important route of transport for the Spanish when they controlled Manila. However, the river has become very polluted due to neglect and industrial development and is considered dead by ecologists.

Interestingly, the Pasig River is considered a tidal estuary, since the direction of flow changes based on the water level of the two bays to which it connects. Today, the Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission is hard at work to restore and rehabilitate the river for greater use. The city of Manila in the Philippines could still easily make use of this route, so many private organizations with interest in the use of the river have become involved in the support through the Piso para sa Pasig (A Peso for the Pasig) campaign.
