The University of the Philippines, founded in 1908, is the only national university in the country and provides tertiary level education in most fields. With locations across the country (and the main location in the capital city of Manila), programs for medicine, political science, public health, law, engineering, agriculture, natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and more can be chosen. The university has won a number of awards, including the highest ranking for any school in the Philippines in the THES-QS World University Rankings in 2006 and 2007.

Having educated some of the country’s most popular political and social leaders, economists, lawyers, doctors, and entrepreneurs, the University of the Philippines (often called simple U.P.) is noted for highly politicized student leaders and promotion of causes and positions on national issues. An entry test is required for enrollment, and while over 70,000 applicants (a record number) flocked to test in 2006, the school admitted only about 11,000 of the top-ranked applicants (about 18%), making this opportunity a highly selective and competitive practice.
