Povoação Hotels and Accommodation
The community of Povoacao is on the island of Sao Miguel, the largest island in Portugal’s Azores Archipelago. Povoacao is on the southern part of the island, east of Ponta Delgada, the largest city. Though Povoacao was the first settlement on the island, it is still just a small community of about 6,700 inhabitants who make their living through agriculture, fishing, and working in the tourist business. It is a pretty little town with a quaint central square and picturesque old streets leading down to the harbor. The 15th century Church of Nossa Senhora Rosario is believed to have been the first church built in the islands. It was restored in the 19th century.
