Although you may book your hotel with EasyToBook.com in Amares, chances are that you will be spending a great deal of your time in Braga, the neighboring, larger town. However, Amares does offer the only National Park in Portugal, the National Park of Peneda-Geres. The park is becoming popular for its eco-tourism options, though these are still developing.
The neighboring town of Braga is often called the Portuguese Rome because of the great number of religious structures in the town. In fact, the residents of the town are known to be very conservative and to take their religious beliefs very seriously. Perhaps the most well-known and visited sight is the Bom Jesus, or Good Jesus, Sanctuary. The sanctuary’s gardens are an intricate, beautiful compliment to the architectural plans created by Carlos Amarante, with the dual bell towers and ornate moldings. Nearby is the Sameiro Sanctuary, considered the second most important pilgrimage site in all of Portugal after the town of Fatima.
