Sertã is located on the River Zêzere approximately 50 km northeast of Tomar, and is the ancient town of the Sertã region. Legend says it owes its name to the wife of a noble Lusitanian, who is said to have attacked Roman invaders with a frying pan (sertã) full of boiling oil. Attractions include the 15th century mother church with rich gilded woodwork and 16th/17th century tiles the castle ruins, and the Misericórdia church. In the town a 16th century pillory has a Maltese cross, armillary sphere and the town’s coat of arms. Sertã offers many opportunities for water sports in the surrounding countryside.

Near Sertã the town of Ferreira do Zêzere with its ornate parish church is surrounded by forest and lakes and a water sports centre. The Avecasta Caves are another nearby attraction.
