The city of Leiria is in the district of Leiria, which is in the traditional province of Beira in Portugal. Guests staying in budget hotels in Leiria will find the community to be a mixture of medieval and modern influences. It is a lively university town set in a location that has been fortified since Roman times. There are plenty of good restaurants, as well as bars and cafes that cater to the student population.
Leiria’s main attraction is the Castelo, which is on a height above the town. It was built in 1135 on the ruins of a Moorish castle which had been built on a Roman fort. In the early 14th century King Dinis of Portugal had the castle enlarged and made into a royal residence. Much of the castle has been restored, and the keep offers a magnificent view of the city and countryside. Here you can also see the ruins of the 12th century Gothic Church of Nossa Senhora da Pena. Below the castle is the 12th century Church of Sao Pedro. The 16th century Renaissance Cathedral is in the old part of Leiria. On a hill opposite the castle is the 16th century Santuario de Nossa Senhora da Encarnacao. Leiria has some attractive 16th and 17th century mansions that were once the homes of nobility. In early September Leiria holds a popular food festival called Festival de Gastronomica, which also features music and folk dancing.
