No visit to Leiria would be complete without seeing the Castle of Leiria. Built by Dom Afonso Henriques in the 12th century after retaking the city from the Moors, the castle was later improved upon by King Dinis, who made the castle a summer retreat. Wander through the cobble stoned streets of the city center and discover the Igreja de Sao Pedro, a cathedral which dates from the 12th century. Equally impressive is the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação, a 16th century sanctuary that can be found very close to the castle.
