Pombal, which means “dovecote,” was founded by the Knights Templar in the 12th Century, and named for the many doves nesting on the castle's battlements. The town and surrounding area are overshadowed by the castle of Gualdim Pais, Master of the Knights Templar. It lies near the crossing of the IC8 and N1 auto routes, and not far from the A1 route. Pombal's main attraction is the Palace of the Marquês, which is an 18th Century manor house. The property consists of three merged estates: The Quinta de Baixo (the palace itself, the chapel [Our Lady of the Graces], the wine cellar and some farmlands), the Quinta de Cima (the fishing house, the grand Taveira cascade, the orchards, and the copses for the raising of silkworms and production of wood), and the Quinta do Marco (the Casa da Serra, olive trees, vineyards, and orchards). Near the Church of Sao Martinho, in the main square, there is a monument to the Marquês de Pombal. You can also see the 15th Century Old Clock Tower, the Church of Our Lady of Cardal (dating from 1703), and the Church of Our Lady of Piety (built in 1551).
