Those interested in the history and architecture of the area will find there’s plenty to see. The Fort of São Julião da Barra, which was built in the 17th century, is located right on the seafront. Built by Italian architects, it became a political prison in the 18th and 19th centuries. At the mouth of the Turgus River stands the Bugio lighthouse. Standing on its own island, work was started on the lighthouse in the 17th century and was originally constructed of wood. In nearby Oeiras, visitors can set their eyes on the Palace of the Marquis of Pombal, an 18th century manor house, where they can marvel at its charming architecture and stroll through its period gardens.
