Colares is a settlement of about 8,000 permanent residents, located in the Portuguese municipality of Sintra. Colares is located relatively close to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. The town, many of whose old monuments date back to Roman times, occupied a position of regional importance twice in its history: once in the 13th century, and once in the 19th. During those two brief periods, the town was the capital of its own municipality. Colares means "hills" in the Portuguese language. The town derives its name from its position across two gentle hills. The central part of town still retains much of its historical character. Wine-making, farming, tourism, and horticulture drive the economy of Colares today.
