Staying in one of the discount hotels near the Castle of São Jorge in Lisbon enables you to visit this historic attraction at your leisure. It gets its name from the late 14th Century during the reign of King Joao I, prior to that time it was simply known as Lisbon Castle. The castle is truly very impressive, and consists of the former citadel of Alcazar with twelve separate gateways, distinctive and well maintained battlements and eighteen towers. Although the Castle has obviously been used in the past as a royal palace, it has also been used as barrack accommodation and even a prison.
There are several cheap hotels near the Castle of São Jorge in Lisbon which can be found here at EasyToBook.com – along with hotel reviews. But as with many of the iconic buildings in Lisbon, the Castle of São Jorge was badly damaged during the dramatic 1755 earthquake. The building was declared as a National Monument in 1910, thankfully, and after that restoration work started in earnest. There are no admission fees at the site, but there are steep steps in places, but it’s worth the climb as the views of the city from the castle are difficult to beat.
