The Lisbon underground system came into operation on December 29th 1959, four years after the construction works began. At the time, it was the fourteenth underground system in Europe and twenty-fifth in the world (the first having been London, in 1863). The Campo Grande railway station was actually a late addition to the circuit, and was not opened until 1993. It is located on top of the Campo Grande viaduct and it was the first elevated part of the metro, lying above ground.

The Campo Grande station has nowadays become an even more important transport hub for the city, as the network has been expanded over recent years. There are plenty of discount hotels at the Campo Grande station in Lisbon, which you can book here at EasyToBook.com. It is likely that if you spend a few days in Lisbon you will inevitably move through this impressive modern metro station at some stage in your travels, as it is a transfer station from the north to south yellow line and the green line. It is also the stop for the City Museum.
