Hotels near Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon - Best deals & budget rates!

You will thoroughly enjoy exploring one of the wonderful examples of Manueline architecture for which Lisbon is known. The Monastery faces the Tagus River, and is a noted World Heritage site. This is something that tourists who are in Lisbon will not want to miss. Considered one of the most beautiful churches in Europe, Jeronimos Monastery has a rich history. In 1496, King Manuel was granted permission to hire a French architect to transform a small chapel into this massive building. This structure is the site where Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama and his men knelt in prayer for a safe journey, and was built as a thank you to the Virgin of Belem for Da Gama’s safe voyage to India.

You will see many statues in and around the monastery, such as Our Lady of Belem and Prince Henry the Navigator. Impressive stonework and sculpture, along with detailed artwork combine to make this museum attraction quite special. During your visit, take note of the lovely gardens, which feature hedges in the shape of several different Portuguese coats of arms.
